What is Wwoofing? A question I get a lot. The Travel Tester is open for all your questions about travelling, working and living in Australia.

What is Wwoofing?

Question

Do you know anything about Wwoofing? – Mary

Answer: What is Wwoofing?

I do Mary! Wwoofing is a great way of exploring Australia and getting involved with a local community while volunteering. I haven’t tried it myself unfortunately, but some of my hostel guests have and they had an amazing experience.

The WWOOF (Willing Workers on Organic Farms) Australia organization was founded in 1971 in the UK. In short, they link volunteers with organic farmers all over the country and help them share more sustainable ways of living, learning about Organics, Bio-dynamics and Permaculture. On the farms, you will work in exchange for accommodation, meals and knowledge about organic lifestyles.

Usually, you’ll work about 4-6 hours per day. This can be anything: planting trees, feeding animals, organising an arts festival, farming/gardening work to research, environmental work or rescuing turtles, depending on where you are. It’s all in negotiation with your hosts (remember you will stay with a family, not a hostel).

As a WWOOF member (for a small fee), you will receive a small volunteer accident insurance plan that covers you while you are WWOOFing on a registered Australian WWOOF host property. You’ll also get a book with contact details for over 2400 hosts throughout Australia. Around 240 of these are Certified Organic and approximately 1900 are traditional farms using organic practices. Anyone from 18 can join to help and preserve precious Australian eco-systems.

If you would like to know more about what is wwoofing, please check the WWOOF website.

Please send me your Australia questions!

I’ve visited Australia 3 times, travelled all around the country and lived in Sydney for 2 years, working as a hostel receptionist and travel agent. I’ll do my best to answer to my best and current knowledge, or help you find the right resources to prepare for the trip of your lifetime. I fell in love with Australia, and I know you will too.
